Damn, 18% is no joke; that’s over $22k a year difference. At 124k, you’re already doing well, but that kind of gap starts feeling like you’re leaving real money on the table, especially with how expensive everything’s gotten.
I totally get liking your team. That’s huge, and not something you find everywhere. Good coworkers can make even a meh paycheck feel tolerable. But when the market’s clearly paying more, it’s hard not to at least think about options.
Do you check sites like Salary.com, Glassdoor, or Levels. FYI pretty regularly, or was this the first time in a while you looked? And have you thought about casually bringing it up with your manager like asking what the path is to get closer to market rate without threatening to leave? Sometimes just showing the data can nudge them.
What you see and what you get are usually two very different things. At what number or percentage do others start job hunting? I also like my team and company a lot, so my number would be a lot higher. You also have to consider workload and other benefits.
I’m not checking that often, maybe just once a year or when I think about moving. But seeing that gap is definitely eye-opening! It makes me rethink how often I should be doing it.
