Very difficult. It’s like asking if the school administrator can become the school nurse
The jobs are inherently very different. The only caveat is that for some smaller firms, even mid office roles are involved in the deal process
Thank for this!
Depends on the firm. If it's a highly operationally focused fund, it may be an opportunity. Also worth seeing if there's anyone else at that firm who's made the transition to gauge the opportunity. That said, you could probably do a few years in ops, learn from your colleagues, try to get as involved as you can in the deal process, and then go the MBA route. That ops experience might let you move into an investment role more easily coming out of an MBA.
In general, it is very difficult as skillset differs significantly.
Usually you will need IBD experience or management consulting with DD experience. At the junior level, PE firms usually prefer IBD experience as they need their analyst to run the deal process.
You may have a better shot at smaller funds to move to the deal side.
Having said that, smaller funds may not have a mid office ops team.
It’s very difficult. I have seen people move to rating agencies then move to a fund as credit analyst.
