Definitely doable. Not even hard actually.
Barely an inconvenience

Clarifying question: Do you parents or in-laws own a PE firm? If so, this is completely doable
I hear KKR and Blackstone will even offer Principal for your experience

Typically I see exits at the SA level
No way
If you have no investing experience then the odds are long. I know people who exitedas EMD jump to an SA / VP role in Operations and some weird hybrid roles (the hybrids had a top MBA) but not investing team.
I joined as a VP from McK EM. I got lucky with a middle market firm that was looking for diverse experiences (some folks have finance, some have consulting, some have entrepreneurship). Their words: “we have multiple people who can build a model, but we want someone who can think differently). CDD is such a small part of the role, and honestly my RTS experience helped more with value creation.
It was definitely a step down to being an individual contributor, and the job itself is a little different.
If you want to do this I would suggest a) look at smaller PE funds, family offices or even independent sponsors, b) align yourself with industry or strategy-focused firms (eg healthcare, turnarounds, middle market), c) go for an ops role, d) be willing to take a “step down” - it’s basically a new career line. You will most likely not get a look at a large cap fund or a very established firm unless you have banking or PE experience as well consulting.
At fernweh, we only hire folks with investment experience

Ahh if only we all had the foresight to shoot for investing roles when we were young minnows to make this realistic…I blame my parents. I’m also prob too dumb but such is life.
At VP level is tough because McK doesn’t prepare you at all for the deal process. I joined as an associate in PE — steep learning curve. Couldn’t imagine joining as a VP.
