For case interview prep: I don’t recommend the book case in point, but I do recommend victor cheng email signup, YouTube case interviews, check out consulting firm websites on case interview resources, check out Reddit and fishbowl on the topic, etc.
Let me know if you are interested in a referral at Deloitte!
Btw would u like to connect further am looking for a good mentor.
The big problem I see here is that you’re not really versed in the corporate jargon we tend to use.
Anyone can solve problems for businesses, okay? Businesses these days are looking for “strategic personnel and asset planning” — and if you can throw some cost reduction in there, more power to you.
If I say I work in management consulting, I’m cold and boring. Soften up those terms a little bit, okay? You need to be approachable without feeling too personal. Tell me a story about what you want to do. Use some analogous language to give me a picture I’ll understand.
What do I do? I’m a greasy, small-shop mechanic for your information technology business. You don’t want to go to the dealership, okay? They’re going to charge you an arm and a leg, and I have been working on these same systems for 20 years now. When your database architecture becomes cumbersome and bloated, I know how to swap it out for something more reliable — like that time your kid learned to drive a manual and destroyed your clutch. It happens. It’s not a huge deal. You just don’t want to over-pay for the service.
… but maybe your car is fine, right? You just want to add a little heat under the hood. Okay, I’ll put FastAPI in a container, hook it up to your existing databases, and make some middleware to connect to a GUI. Now you have an open data platform built in React where your clients and vendors get added value from working with you.
Now I’m going to put down my greasy shop towel and my wrench and get back to these Jira tickets, but when you’re ready for the right little consulting shop, you come talk to me.
… see how that works? Give me a story. I need to FEEL like you actually gave me something I can understand. That’s the difference between average consultants and the ones who make money in this business.
My respects to you for this amazing advice
Based on this post not much of a strategist eh
Be top down mate
OP, M1 probably means you should also work on your comms to be top down

Porters 5 forces is trash.
If you have graduated just apply for the jobs. You’ll be fine. You’ll learn on the job.

The framework basically says ‘this is a good business if it had no competition due to regulation that shuts down competition’. That is not a good investment as there is no innovation or strategy and the good factors are outside your control.
For what it’s worth, my business school ridiculed the 5 forces.

This post is why behavioral interviews exist.
I appreciate the enthusiasm here! I remember graduating & feeling ready to take on the world. It’s a great energy to have.
My best advice for you is to get a job ASAP. Academic based learning has diminishing returns because everything is in generalities. No client engagement is ever going to fit perfectly into a framework. Potential employers are looking for proof that you can work, not that you can take courses. Hands on experience is what you need now. Tbh, you also need a good story about why you graduated in January and haven’t started working. (This might be more normal outside of the US though.)
Other pieces of advice I usually share with new grads:
- Your first job doesn’t have to be the dream job; it just has to be on the path to getting you there.
- Lower your expectations (sorry). Your job at entry level is to learn, take direction, and be as helpful as possible, which often means just taking notes and keeping people organized.
- You want a few kinds of people in your corner. One is a “soft” mentor who is ~3-5 years ahead of you, another who is ~10 years ahead, and then a “sponsor” who is more partner level and will advocate for your career in the near term. They all serve different purposes throughout your career.
Good luck!
Thanks alot for your feedback. It's really helpful. The reason why I don't have a job right now is that I am from Afghanistan and I had to leave my country and run away at the end of 2021 because of the Taliban and come to the Netherlands. I have not received my work permit here yet and am not allowed to work because I am an asylum seeker. Even though I believe am prepared for work because I have 3 years of management experience. Either I will receive my work permit here or by march 2023 I will be leaving for the US. I tried working as a volunteer in a management position here but didn't like it. As soon as I get a work permit or go to the US I will start working again. Hopefully, this is a good reason why I have not worked all this time.
Secondly, your advice on getting a mentor is really valuable. I will work on it as soon as possible and maybe u can be my mentor if you like. Can we connect on LinkedIn?
And about lowering my expectations, I talked about this with my brother and that's what he said also. Therefore, I will try to get a job with a consulting firm that is not well known maybe a local one and learn there once am prepared I will start applying for the big firms.
Thanks alot.
I like your energy ! Find a mentor this has helped me more than school
Thanks will do. U work in management consulting?
Great energy… I remember my early days. Keep the energy up and learning spirits high.
My recommendation will be to stay open and keep an eye on how things are changing around you. Bookish knowledge is good for making a living. But, to stand out you need more. As you move ahead you will find new areas…explore them. Find time to ask yourself if the path chosen is right.
I always say… drive a road that has junctions … not a highway. Junctions allow you to change directions and be flexible. Life is a marathon and adapting to change is a great asset. Good luck 👍🏻
Thanks alot for your response. As u mentioned I have to keep an eye out for changing environments can you please elaborate on this and how I can do this? How can I explore new areas and find them and what kind of areas?

This post gives off some non-target school vibes. Not that that’s a bad thing (i was also non-target, went to target b school, broke into consulting), but there’s some sharpening that would carry you a long way.
It’s not really about saying you know frameworks and like building business processes, it’s more about helping clients solve problems, whatever those may be.
I’d suggest start doing coffee chats with consultants. You can see the way they talk and what they focus on and start to adopt the common threads to seem like you knows what the industry is about. Echoing previous posters, experience and exposure will help

Yep, you got it! Just keep at it
Continued: Right now I am learning different models of porter and other frameworks. I will be learning some product management after this and after that focusing on problems and case-solving. Then I will be applying for management consulting jobs.
Do you guys think I am on the right track? What specific things helped u in ur journey? Am I choosing the right field? Do you have any advice for me if you were in my place? What will u tell ur younger self before joining management consulting?
You are overthinking this.
Find a mentor. Get out of the books and get experience. Stop using “u” and “ur” in written communications if you want anyone to take you seriously.
