The worst thing you can do to yourself is compare yourself with others around you. Not everyone has the same journey. How you define success doesn’t necessarily mean how they define it. You might think they are successful and happy because they got into FAANG, but they may have other problems in life that you are unable to see. May be they have health issues, family issues, relationship issues, and what not?
You’re still succeeding in consulting. We all get dinged - just keep at it
First, you never know how many times others have “failed” before they got that job. Second, I am at a job that I absolutely love now, but I’m only at that job because I didn’t get dozens of other jobs I interviewed for. I was super frustrated at the time but I wouldn’t change it now. My first job was one that I had really wanted and was thrilled to get, and it turned out to be an awful experience. You never know how things are going to turn out. Failures might turn out to be blessings and vice versa. Keep your chin up and keep applying; you’re clearly smart, you’ll break through eventually
I interviewed for close to a year before I landed my current job. I had final rounds at three consulting firms and another FAANG that required spending countless nights preparing and agonizing over each role. One after another, after throwing everything I had into the interviews, I kept getting rejected. The process no doubt took a toll on me emotionally. Sometimes it’s not going to work out, and that could be for any number of reasons. I kept telling myself that if I can get to final rounds, I’m good enough to be hired. That’s true, and it’s true of your situation as well. You’re one interview away from where you want to be. You’ll get there, just stay strong and focused along the journey.
I just got dinged after a 2nd round google interview. No big deal for me but it also wasn’t my dream job (I’ve been dinged by plenty of those too and it hurts and how I ended up in my current role). I’ll stay with KPMG Strategy for a while longer learn more and perhaps come across a more exciting and better fitting opportunity later once this covid mess is over. Be thankful you have a job now and one that’s good enough to get you interviewed at FAANG roles.
Way to go getting that far - personally I struggle to even apply for new positions.
I'm Manager in TAS. I am pretty successful in consulting (4 rating out of 5 kind). I have had final rounds with FB strategy, AWS strategy and other consulting firms (despite being on work visa... yes, even the FAANGs are hesitant in this situation).
I got rejected from all in final rounds, even after going through referrals or being liked by Hiring Managers/VP (that's how I cleared 1st rounds).
Yes, I feel shitty because now I'm self doubting myself if I know what I'm doing or if I know my subject matter expertise. The rejections came after working on my cases/behaviors, prepping with colleagues/friends, getting feedbacks and adjusting my stories.
At this point I just have no idea whether it my face they don't like or if I'm just not good enough.
