How transparent are your companies about salary bands across levels and roles? At mine, numbers are super hush-hush, and it’s starting to feel like the secrecy is mostly there to keep us from realizing who’s underpaid.

Very transparent at my company but there are obvious career paths one must take

Postings in my org including the salary ranges so it’s easy to guess what the others are earning which in turn has reduced the need to keep it super private.

Agree with you that transparency is important here. In our organization, it is easy to get estimates for what people are making just because of job description postings with salary bands

You can get the salary bands by looking at and applying to roles internally. It’s not super transparent but HR will share them in that situation.

The secrecy is a feature, not a bug — opacity is a comp strategy. Companies that keep bands hidden are almost always sitting on meaningful internal inequities they'd rather not defend. The states with pay transparency laws (CA, NY, CO) have accidentally run the experiment: when bands go public, the underpaid find out immediately. What's telling is how companies respond to direct asks — "can you share the band for this role?" is a clean diagnostic. Legitimate answer: yes, here's the range. Deflection answer: "it depends on experience." That's not a band, that's a blank check to lowball. Has anyone actually gotten a straight answer when they asked HR directly?

Question about remote job negotiations

I'm currently interviewing for a remote role for a company based in NY.

The thing is I'm based in a different city (southern U.S.)

My question is:

When it comes time to talk compensation, should I base the market rate for the role on my city of residence or NY?

Would it make sense to ask them directly how they determine comp for NY-bases vs. other city-based employees?

Anyone have experience with this?

I’m at $165k now, what should I ask for with my promotion?
