I started at Orrick. It is no worse a sweatshop than any peer firm, and is meaningfully better in some ways. I’m confident that Orrick would not tolerate the outright verbal abuse from partners to associates that we sometimes see discussed in this bowl.

Orrick is awesome imo. Of course it will always still depend on the specific partners you work under. But the overall culture is not as backwards as many other peer firms

I’ve heard it’s one of the better big law firms for WLB but still big law.

Agree with the others. It’s the best wlb firm I’ve worked at but hours can still be rough.

How have you combated your fear of rejection? I fixate on such small things as when my friends, for example, reject plans I have made. This definitely makes me more averse to putting myself out there and makes me ruminate on past perceived failures, which are clearly not good for personal growth

Any insight on Brewer (either office, generally curious about the firm). I assume comp after year 1 is discretionary, rather than lock-step, given the size of the firm. Would appreciate happiness, horror stories, of whatever “firm culture” falls between the two. DM me if you don’t want to share publicly.

There’s a practice group that I’ve been trying to find work in but whenever I volunteer to help, I always get roped in to do non billable work. In the beginning it was fine but now I’m feeling it’s never going to amount to actual work. Any tips to get more involved without all the non billables and how to approach this gently?

I recently lateraled into Big Law. Most of my colleagues are homegrown. My shift did involve a big change in practice area, and there's work that I haven't done before that I now have to do.

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.
