Others say it's a little too exaggerated but I should say that the real life FBI agents are worse than what I see from the movies.
FBI is usually portrayed in movies in two ways: bumbling idiots or complete assholes. While there are instances of both in the Bureau, the majority of agents are smart, dedicated and willing to learn. They also are usually very careful to not step on the toes of the locals. We all have the same goal which is putting criminals in jail. Every office note has task forces that are comprised of other federal agency people as well as local law enforcement.
My uncle was a career FBI agent from the time he graduated from college until he reached mandatory retirement age a few years ago. He claimed that it is nothing like television. There is a lot more paperwork and time spent in court or at the office than most people realize.
One of the most inaccurate things about the show is the frequency of Navy and Marine Corps personnel in the DC metro area being killed. It may be more hazardous for naval personnel on NCIS than it is for real naval personnel engaged in combat.
I've been surprised that many of the FBI agents I've met have seemed more low-key than many other law enforcement officers. They take their work seriously but don't seem to take themselves as seriously if that makes sense.
In my experience, definitely!
As someone who works in a job that is frequently glamorized in movies and on television, I can confirm that the bit about the federal government enjoying paperwork is totally accurate.
I used to have sporadic interactions with FBI officers. I couldn't see most of them assaulting a narcotics plant with weapons blazing. These were mostly ordinary-looking middle-aged men dressed in low-cost suits.
This comment made me laugh. Love it!
I'm not sure whether this counts, but the depiction of Interpol and its interaction with the FBI is usually amusing. Not only does Interpol lack field agents like a legitimate law enforcement organization, but they are usually seen in some type of jurisdictional disagreement with American authorities.
I've met a few FBI agents that investigate financial crimes. They are agents, and they carry firearms, but the majority of their job is done on the computer, looking at bank statements, tracing where cheques are going, and so on.
Usually, Not much…..in so many shows we are portrayed as a**holes…or jerks. In other shows they make us our to be invincible,…which we are not. Being an FBI Agent is a wonderful job…the FBI Agents I know are amazing people. But at the end of the day…..we are just people.
Many times shows escalate response time and case solved in 42 minutes including commercials. Tv is designed and used for entertainment value. Technology is fascinating but look at the old Perry Mason shows…at the very end someone always stands up and confessed. It’s all for entertainment!
The last police shows I watched were NYPD Blue and Hills Street Blues. Prior to those I watched Barney Miller.
So to say I have been away from the genre for a while would be accurate. I highly doubt they accurately reflect the realities of law enforcement, but I do not plan to watch one to see if that is a fair statement.
They are intended to provide entertainment. Real police work is seldom entertaining.
While some elements may be exaggerated for dramatic effect, the core values and principles of the agency are usually accurately reflected. I appreciate the attention to detail, as it helps to give viewers and readers a better understanding of the important work that the FBI does.
I think the FBI are portrayed as this bigger than life agency which are more powerful than the police force and have secrets that they only know the answers to.
I agree. They are portrayed that way a lot of the time.
They are portrayed as the agency that knows the answer to what is beyond the outer reaches of space. lol
When you think about it FBI are always seen as shady, scheming, and downright scary. It's because they know how to keep their secrets and know everybody else's.
Nope. Imagine watching a show where a cop has the ability to bend and badly break department rules, with nothing more than an angry rebuke or threats of what might happen in the future.
I think it is inaccurately portrayed most of the time.
Every time I see The FBI it's always the same people going in with no back-up so is not the job for me
How do I become a FBI agent always wanted to pursue it.
Wow
