I always thought mentorship was the key to breaking in, but I’ve had people give me advice that turned out to be… not great. One mentor told me never to negotiate rates early in my career because it would “make me look greedy,” and I later found out I was underpaid by thousands. Another insisted I only take network shows to be “taken seriously,” even though cable was where the real opportunities were. Have you ever realized a mentor’s advice was holding you back instead of pushing you forward?

Mentors mean well, but advice is colored by their own experience. Cross-check what they say with others you trust, and trust your instincts too.

Our employee satisfaction survey is tied to our performance goals. Meaning, if we rate management badly, we cannot meet 10% of our goals which in turn affects our bonuses and raises. We asked HR but they didn’t do anything about it. Is this normal? Is this legal? If not, what else can we do about it?

I’m currently at a studio that has been good to me. They took a chance and allowed me to change career paths. They gave me numerous opportunities that lead me to now, being the head of a department. The big guys at the top has expressed they could see me as the guy to run the company one day but it’s all talk and possibilities right now. I’ll have to wait for now. On the other hand, I have an offer in hand from a much bigger company to be part of their business development. Any advice?

I once asked a colleague at a radio company how much he's paid monthly, and he outright refused to tell me. In fact, he found it very odd that I asked. I later learned that he was making double my salary. I know it's not an employee's job to fix pay inequity by sharing their salary figures, but I'm still of the opinion that it helps uncover pay gaps. But do you think it's wise to do so at the risk of damaging your work environment or the whole thing backfiring on you? Thoughts are welcome.
