I forgot exactly where I read this but someone has a quote about humans craving nostalgia and familiarity that appears fresh. Reboots and remakes appeal to us at some subconscious level because we're drawn to things that are familiar
Matt Damon answered this on Hot Ones pretty succinctly, I suggest you watch that to get an idea of what’s going on with Hollywood/entertainment in general. It basically boils down to money.
Wow, I just went and gave that video a watch. Great rec!
It's not so much that there is no creativity in Hollywood, plenty of good scripts never make it to production, Making a film is a massive investment of both time and money, so companies are incentivized to go with what sells and if that means always using the same actors and remaking the same movies over and over again then that's what we're gonna get
Nostalgia is definitely a money-making machine. Especially any move set in the 80s. I don't know if there is a rhyme or reason for that or if the 80s were just a good time for everyone, but I think all the remakes are welcome. There are still good movies out there.
Also helps deal with hard times, “the good ol’ days” and all that. Also it’s just more of a guarantee to make money, in an industry that’s currently trying to grapple with how to make money with a streaming model.
You are right, there are few film that have an original plot. It's a bit frustrating
Yes, I've been noticing this a lot more in recent years and it's got me scratching my head as well. Like, do we really need a reboot of Ghost Busters? Even some TV shows are starting to reboot as well. How about some fresh content for a change???
Tell me about it. So bored.
For the most part, Hollywood is trying to make money first, and if it's a good film, that's just an added bonus. Brand recognition is huge for getting people to watch a movie. Why would they take a risk with a bold, forward-thinking film when they can just churn out the 17th Fast and Furious movie and rake it in
Take a look at the list of highest grossing films. A significant portion of them are either sequels, remakes, or franchise reboots. Make of that what you will https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/top_lifetime_gross/?area=XWW
They don't call it show "business" for nothing. This is a proven formula that works so production companies are going to keep milking an idea until it no longer is profitable.
Like others have said, it's not creativity that motivates Hollywood, but money. People pay money to keep watching these remakes, so they're going to keep making it. Only thing you can really do is not pay to watch these movies
Couldn't agree more. I was checking on Netflix and you know what, Korean, Thai and Japanese films are keeping up. Korean films always have a very good story line and their actors are way better than Hollywood ones. Hollywood needs to step up their game. They are losing it.
I agree! When it comes to plot and ideas, Kdramas are really stepping up! I am hooked!!
Yup, they just keep regurgitating the same ideas over and over. Foreign productions can be pretty innovative though so maybe it's time to expand your horizons!
I totally agree. They are running out of ideas and creativity. That's why I personally watch Asian movies/dramas.
Seems like it. Everything's so cookie-cutter nowadays. There's just no flavor anymore.
