Stick it out for 6 months. PL at BCG is a big deal and will get you awesome market recognition. You are so close to the end of the tunnel
Same boat. Doesn’t matter shit. Have got exactly the roles I wanted and probably nothing would change if I stick it out to PL. on the contrary, you lose 6 months tenure in the new org which is significant.
Stay and get the title INCASE you boomerang back to BCG. It’s just 6 months, just make your way through it
This job is hard enough even if you love it, don’t look back
Take a deep breath, and then suck it up for 6 more months. Meanwhile, start applying for jobs, if you find something you like then quit, other wise continue looking, this remove the pressure of you to accept any offer that comes your way. Finding and getting the right job is not easy.
It means a lot but for you to decide whether that increment is worth it given where you might want to exit. Any details on what's not bearable at the moment?
Never worth doing something you hate - I would quit post bonus and take advantage of that sweet transition time
Yea but you get more time as a PL. so I would consider sticking it out.
Stick it out if you can...was in same boat and felt the opportunities and outreach I was getting as a C2 were not as solid as PL1. Once your promo date is confirmed you can relax a bit, so you’re actually looking at maybe 3 more months of trying and 3 more of coasting no? That said, if it’s legitimately torture, then draw the line and quit post-bonus. But if you have 3 more months in you then I say it’s worth it to be able to say you left the firm as management.
What's the process for getting promoted from C2 to PL?
In the exact same boat. I’m leaning towards transition after my case ends in mid Jan, which is when the job market will pick back up but have already started interviewing. I don’t think I actually enjoy the work of consulting, so not sure if holding out for PL is even worth it for me. I’ve seen ppl in my start class leave and land great roles already. I think it depends on what you are looking to do. I’m interested in early stage companies or social impact, which I think I can land now.
I sort of felt like that too and ultimately stayed for the promo. But there’s no one size fits all answer. If you’re truly unhappy, then I think you should do what you need to do for your emotional well-being and take transition. There is a not-insignificant amount of overlap between C2 and PL1 exit opps.
A mentor told me that making PL before you leave does two things: (1) shifts your distribution of opportunities favorably, (2) gives you a stronger safety net if your next gig goes south.
On (2), let’s say you join a startup and it’s a total dumpster fire and in 6 months you realize it was a huge mistake. Then when you interview for the next^2 thing, it won’t look like you left BCG because you weren’t going to make PL, AND you underperformed at the startup.
Timing of transition is just a calculated risk you take. Whether you stay for the promo or go to industry, you’ll be in an enviable position to most people so...best of luck!
