At some Big 4 companies there is a Partner / Principal group that has equity and are part owners of the business and an equivalent Managing Director group that does not have equity and are essentially employees.

How does it work at McKinsey / Bain ? Do those same distinctions exist across partner types, owner vs non owner?

Forgive the basic question but can you contract around state statutes? For ex, customer wants to insert state contractor payment statutes and have that state law govern. I’m assuming the way around this is to have another more preferable state as choice of law?

Finally had a breakdown over infertility this AM and trying to pull myself together for Zoom. My tests are fine, but husband can’t deliver during my fertile window. I have a case I have enough evidence on to go to summery judgement on off the gate. Procedurally what's the best way to go a out this? D's are unrepresented and extremely difficult about settlement talks.

I work for a small firm (about 20 attorneys) and make 90k. I’m coming up for a raise discussion in a couple of months but don’t know how to go about it/what is reasonable to ask for. I bill about 35 hrs/week at 400/hr, so I think I deserve a bump, especially considering the posture of the market. Any advice/feedback from similarly situated associates or partners at similarly sized firms?

Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. This morning, a name partners assistant didn't realize the name partner had a depo and didn't confirm it. This is how this firm as been for decades and it's incredibly frustrating to work this way. It's so hard to not stress over this daily.

If I attend my client’s deposition along with a legal assistant/law graduate (bar admission pending), are they permitted to participate (object, redirect) under my supervision or would that be unauthorized practice of law for them?

Is sticking up for yourself even worth it? My boss is always on my ass as if I’m constantly missing, or about to miss, deadlines. I’ve never missed one. I’ve received the same damn lecture/email about monitoring all case deadlines a hundred times. I always just professionally explain that we’re not about to miss any and discuss the progress. When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Our managing partner says that we should, but all of the writing guides for litigators that I've read repeats the mantra "show, don't tell" and explain that most judges dread such words.

I know that the politically correct thing to do here is to do whatever the managing partner wants me to do, but I just wanted to ask for other ppl's opinion.

What is the most number of documents you’ve filed at once using Federal ECF? I had reason to look back today, and my record exceeds 170. Reaching that “filing submitted” page is a core memory at this point, but I’m sure it’s not that uncommon?

I just defended my first depo and I feel like I did a terrible job. The questions and answers were so fast I feel like I didn’t even have a chance to think what objection was appropriate. Any resources for learning objections better. Or tricks on how to tell when a question being asked is not good?

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.

What’s the most unprofessional thing you’ve seen in a deposition recently?

Have an opportunity to finally get out of insurance defense. But not really sold on the firm. Could finally get out of ID, but then could also end up at another place I really don't like. Def want my next firm to be long term as I've jumped around.
