I am currently a CPA, working in public accounting for the past 8 years, but I would like to start my own, little bookkeeping business (maybe a handful of clients, just to have some extra income each month). I am wondering if anyone has their own little side bookkeeping business and if so, how they started it all (acquired new clients, etc).

Thanks!

My colleague sister wanted to start slow. She posted on Craigslist. She has a few clients now. She is happy.

Craigslist!? That’s interesting! I should look there. Thank you!

Starting out you will have to rely on friends, family, close acquaintances and spread through word of mouth. If you go to church it is a great place to start. Make a business card and start handing it out. Good luck!

Yesss good point! Thanks for the advice!

There is a (sometimes free) course that I have seen ads for and the man supposedly shows you how to get started. It may be geared more for people to learn quickbooks but there is a day that covers pricing and getting clients. (I signed up for free but never had time to do it.) Generally there is a fee I think. Maybe worth looking at? His company is Booming Bookkeeping.

like

Ooo thank you! I need to check that out! Good starting point.

That’s a good start to be your own boss

Exactly :)!!

I am in the process of this now, it is not easy. If you already have some clients, you will be off to a better start. Start now by making a website and work on your seo, make up business cards for the cheap. Start your social media channels and post a mix of education, motivation, etc. It will take time to see engagement for just have to be consistent. Then just keep your marketing going with people you know and you can do things like yard signs, etc.

I run 4x4 intervals on a treadmill every 2-3 days, and pushups/hangups/crunches about the same, but somewhat more infrequently. Great exercises to do with little time. In winter I go XC skiing upstate at our cabin every two weekends or so.

What kind of job do audit seniors typically leave for?

I might get a lot of shade for this but tbh I never understood the hype of big fours. I feel I would have just been a slave there. Why would anyone trade their time and time with family for slave hours and money that you could make having your own thing or somewhere else? Everybody sounds miserable at big fours. What’s ur take?
