Lateral.
I feel for you. I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago. I was given the low profile, but critical, strategy work, but had minimal visibility. I decided to make the decision to lateral. As soon as I informed the firm that I would be leaving, they offered me the choice of my projects, but by that time, I had made up my mind.
Bottom line: Lawyers (shockingly!!) are good at lip service. If you truly feel strongly about this, you should plan to lateral. At this time, it appears that your firm has grown used to the fact that you are a good "team player" and will not do anything for you unless they are forced to do it.
I’ve asked/expressed interest numerous times/followed up and get told that I’ll be kept in mind and yet it never happens. They keep reassuring me that I’m doing great.
lol the fact you let them call you special ops and don’t see the disrespect. It made me LOLOLOLOL. #blackops
