Are you currently working? Volunteer to do a related project internally or even pitch it as a gracious act for a client. Get the experience on your resume and it’ll get you that much closer.
If you did that in a data migration project then that’s work experience you can put in your resume
If you want to be data scientist, I suggest you polish your statistics skills. Data science is not just coding but a lot of statistics, and ever more if you are talking about machine learning or even AI.
Some tech companies also value projects you’ve done. Not just corporate projects but your personal projects. Try to build a GitHub repository and start your personal data science project. When you apply for a role, you could also attach your portfolio. I honestly think this might be the best and the only way.
