I've been in manual testing for 80% of my career. Despite attempts to transfer into a more code-centric role, I never got the opportunity to do so. Now that I'm in a management role, I feel like it's too late to enhance my programming skills. Suppose I want to transition into a developer role, will self-study be sufficient for passing the necessary requirements for coding jobs? Lately, I've been learning python and using what I learned by solving problems at leetcode.

Do you want to stay in Test Engineering? If so, integrating DevOps UAT automation in pipelines would probably be a perfect fit to grow your skillset. You'd get coding experience as you go in an area you are already familiar with.

Seconding Slaloms comment ^ there is typically a huge gap of people who can get the pipeline and testing setup in an automated way. If you learn how to weave it together and automate it, your worth your weight in gold for a lot of places.

Seeing that the trend in Test Engineering is automation, I don't really have a choice either but to upskill in coding. As for integrating UAT automation into dev ops, I need to look more into that. Do you have any recommendations for skills/languages/trainings to specialize in that?

Sick! Thanks to both of you!

A CRO offerred me an internal consulting/biz dev role. They offered 145k TC (20% bump) and slightly better benefits. They also offered accelerated path (6mo to 1yr) to MC. While promotion to MC at my current company is at least 1 year away. The job is interesting to me and fits my careery goal. But my big concern is that I've only been with my current company for a year (this is my first job, post PhD). Would this affect my resume in the future in terms of being viewed as "job hopping"?

Should I ask for a raise? My 6-month review is next week and I’m thinking about asking for a raise. I’ve never asked for one before and normally would never think of asking for one until at least 12 months but in the last couple of months my role and responsibilities have enhanced significantly. I don’t have much experience as this is my first job in advertising (comms background) and I don’t want to come off as naive or ignorant! Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you!

Interviewing for a great position in industry (tech). They have equity comp & great benefits. Spoke to their HR, then interviewed with 2 people in the tax department and am getting scheduled for a next round of interviews. The only problem is: the office is about 1 hr from my house (I own). They said repeatedly that they want someone who will be in the office 5 days a week. I would actually move but can’t rent out my place now due to some repairs going on that will take 4-5 months. Thoughts?
