I am working in private but really want to get my CPA license but no one I work with has there CPA. Any recommendations on how to get my CPA license experience without leaving?

There’s a state that allows your experience to be signed off by any other CPA, even if you don’t work with them. There’s also a state(AL) that doesn’t require a CPA to sign off on experience.

Study after work and get it. Why do they need it for you to study?

Yea that’s what I meant

thats what i’m currently doing working in industry while trying to obtain it by studying at night. OP, could you just study after work if you have the time?

I would do some research and consider if you really need your CPA license. Or said differently, get very clear on the benefits you would gain from a CPA license.

I am saying this as someone who has signed off on the experience 4 - 6 people in my work groups. I would encourage anyone who really wants to become a cpa to do so,

In your case, if you are working in PE and enjoy it, there are some major reason that your supervisors and mentors at your employer are not CPAs. They do not work in public companies. And significant private investment has pulled out of public companies in the last 20 years.

If you like private equity and are doing well to the point that leaving that field is a major opportunity cost, think twice about getting your CPA.

Now, if you write back and tell me you want to be a partner at your own audit and tax firm, or want to be a controller or cfo in a public company, the CPA makes a ton more sense. But not having your CPA is unlikely be a barrier to career success in private equity. Consider what credentials your higher ups do have, and invest in those credentials.

Why is education deemed more valuable on a pay scale than experience? Employers will pay someone with a degree and no experience a greater salary, than someone who has exhibited the experience. Understanding that the degreed person committed to school and finished, yet that doesn't diminish what the not degreed has committed to and accomplished in their careers. This has to stop!

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?
