For those who work in Manhattan, do any of you live in Hoboken or Jersey City? Want to move to the area but want to be able to save money on rent for a little then move to the city.

Try Newport or Grove St, you will save on rent and 4% manhattan tax

Hoboken and Jersey City are both still pretty expensive. They're a bit cheaper than Manhattan, but not as much as you'd think. Mainly you just get a bit more space. In regards to commute, it really depends where your work is. The path makes it real easy to get into the city, but it just goes to the west side. Getting to downtown or midtown west isn't an issue. If you've got to go to East Village everyday then that could be a long commute.

Depends, if you are single then may be, since its easier get laid or date. Newport is better for working couples to relax after work walk by the river etc

Yeah my next question was whether you think it's wise to not pay the NYC income tax

I'm not sure if it's a resident tax or a tax on income earned within the city. If the tax is on income earned within the city then you have to pay regardless of where you live. It might be a resident tax though.

Its resident tax

Buying a house with monthly expense of $4900, although my current rent is only $2350. My total HHI with my husband is about $310K. I’m feeling weary of spending this much but we live in a HCOL area near a major city and we have high taxes. It’s hard to find anything decent under $800K. Should I just suck it up in order to be a homeowner?
