Include it in the recap after he returns in his time away. Building a rapport with your boss is important.
I have a great relationship with my boss. He’s got my back. Plus I think he thinks that other guy is a douchebag. My boss is very keen on maintaining quality outputs for clients and this man’s actions do the opposite - so I guess that’s how to frame it. Just don’t know if it’s right to raise it with him given him the only slot his EA could give me was 9 am Monday 🥲
Yes, definitely mention it just in the way you did here- focus first and primarily on the impact to client/ business. Don’t make it personal, but make it clear the risk it posed and your concerns re: the impact. Then offer that perhaps the team could align on some basic ways of working in the work place, especially when someone is covering for another and “role” and “authority” can be loosely interpreted. The boss needs to be aware, for sure, for a multitude of reasons.
Super, thank you for the time writing this
Is the situation still a problem and is the project still in jeopardy ? That is, is there a reason to notify your boss so he or she can help solve a problem that was created? If so, tell the boss you need help, and explain objectively what happened, without using language like “blindsided” and “division”. Simple say “X and I were discussing blah blah blah with the client. X proposed this solution, client agreed, and now we are in this particular situation. Can you help us out?”
If the project is no longer in jeopardy and everything turned out fine, don’t raise it to your boss. It couldn’t have been that big of a problem if things turned out ok. Without more information, I’m not sure how selling the client an alternative solution is “undermining” you. The exception to this would be if this person constantly “undermines” you in a way that is sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise similarly inappropriate.
Yes the project is still in jeopardy because he set the scene for how it will now unfold - which is strategically not viable. This remit is my job. He’s a project manager. So we’ll be doing something for a client now that goes against our original recommendation. I’ve only been on this piece of business for one month so hence the difficult position for me.
