It’s not an argument for belief in that sense. It’s an appeal to the (correct) logic that, if you’re on the fence, you should just jump in
Like how Jordan Peterson is so clearly on the edge. That’s the kind of situation I think it’s useful for
A lot of times it comes from immature understanding of the Bible, usually the average Christian tells their kid if they don’t believe they will go to hell, so the scare tactic might work when you’re younger. Or it’s a way to lure in brand new people to become believers. But I don’t think mature believers use this as their primary source of why they believe. And mature believers will always be much much much fewer in number compared to your average Christian.
TBH it’s more of an argument used when you’re living deep in sin and you enjoy your life as is without obedience to God’s Word - that pleasure is temporary because it will only lead to one place and that place has eternal suffering that we can’t even imagine. But when you become a more mature Christian - you learn this eternal suffering is also more than just the pain and torture of hell - it’s also eternal separation from God, and THAT is what we should fear the most when you finally have a relationship with God.
Do you hear a lot of Christians using this argument? I've never heard of it working, so it seems like a bad play.
