The tech industry is very nepotistic. Best approach is to network with people or organisations already in/adjacent to the field. I knew a guy who barely had anything to show, but managed to become a software developer because his father was good friends with the recruiter. Good luck
As an immigrant, one of the things that attracted me to the United States was the belief that skills, hard work, and merit would open doors. Back where I came from, who you knew often mattered more than what you knew. It’s a little disappointing to see how much networking and personal connections can influence opportunities here as well. Perhaps that’s one reason more people are choosing entrepreneurship, building something of their own rather than depending entirely on a job. After all, a job can sometimes feel like being ‘just over broke,’ while a business offers the possibility of creating your own opportunities and independence.
Rising Star
Referrals are key right now! Most roles get hundreds if not thousands of applications in minutes. No recruiter or hiring manager has time to go through them all. So they look for people that others on the team might know or have worked with before.
Like others have said, this is a who you know market not a what you know market, unfortunately it’ll get better. It always does. It’s just a crappy time right now for a lot of people.
I don’t think you’re necessarily doing anything wrong. Does your resume line up with the keywords you see in the job descriptions? Is it easy to read and ATS-friendly? Are you getting interviews and no follow-up? If you can get good feedback, work with it.
Referrals are certainly important but there are fewer of those to go around. If you are seeing job descriptions where you would be a solid candidate, keep applying. I sense that job postings have cycles so the beginning or the end of a business quarter can be important as well as beginning of the year and end of the year. Companies are timing hiring to their budget windows.
Every day and every week, I go through it. Sometimes things come in bunches. Other times, absolutely nothing happens. I had two recruiters tell me companies are looking for a purple squirrel. Meaning a candidate that doesn't exist. You aren't the only one feeling this way. And sadly misery does not enjoy company.
