@I find myself being “lazy” on weekends recently…i tell myself “i’ll do more work on the weekend” probably every week and i will avoid it like the plague, wont touch it. Not sure if this is lazy anymore or i just straight up don’t want to do the work. On pace for 2350 hours, and really dont feel like doing more especially being at a new firm and should be getting around $40-60k bonus based on interview/contract but ive been burned before…..0 motivation, anyone else get like this? Pay is mid.

No such thing as being lazy when you’re on pace for 2350 my friend

like

If you are doing 2350 without doing weekend work, you don't need to do weekend work.

I'm on pace for 2350 as well. If I'm doing weekend work for something other than a Monday deadline, it's because I cut out early on a weekday and am making up ground.

Same. I think it comes more from a place of when i used to play hockey i was so passionate, it didnt matter when i had to practice or play i found the motivation. It just does not exist in my career. For reference, i made it to pro, didnt keep going because i wanted to pursue my career that i now find myself being “lazy” in.

You’ve been busy. Let yourself relax. Also at your LOE, you handle things better. It’s more of a second nature so you should be able to have the downtime. We are told we have to go go go. As long as you aren’t missing deadlines, it’s fine. It’s good. Be chill.

I’ve been on the bench with J1 for about 3 months. I was worried that because I couldn’t find another project, I would get laid off so I found J2, which pays more, is very meeting heavy, but I really like. I’ve kept J1 because I’m still on the bench doing absolutely nothing and getting paid. Thinking about looking for a role on a project with J1 that’s not along my career path but will allow for me to do work with no calls so that I can manage both jobs. I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult.
