I feel like this was written by an AI. I will say when it comes to simple tasks that require straightforward directions, sure, a lot can be automated. The big thing is when it comes to being able to optimize things, seeing a better way and doing that. That is something AI will not be able to do for a while at least.
It's true, automation is changing the workplace, but I think there's always going to be a need for human touch in administrative roles. There are certain tasks that require empathy, judgment, and interpersonal skills that AI just can't replicate.
That just sounds like more of the usual AI hype. Tossing out something like "much of their work can be automated" indicates a generally oblivious nature to the actual work. There are some tasks that are very routine and may perhaps be automated. But so much of the work requires human judgment.
Even with more automation/AI, there still needs to be a human element to make the automation work. For instance, my firm thought it could reduce the number of admins by creating a more user friendly CRM, travel booking and expense entry. They thought if they made it easier and faster, then the partners wouldn’t mind doing it themselves. Nope! They still didn’t want to “waste” their time looking up and booking flights, entering in their expenses and filling out the electronic forms to start the engagement process and generate the proposal or contract. They don’t want to spend time making a PPT pretty or running reports and creating spreadsheets to analyze the data. They don’t want to spend an hour searching through 10 other partners calendars and reaching out to others to rearrange meetings to find a time everyone is available. All the technology did was make things more efficient for the admins and free them up to take on more responsibility and new opportunities from the partners. So no matter how efficient technology makes work, someone still needs to start the process, review the work, make sure things are approved on time, etc.
For people who don't utilize their admins to the fullest potential, yes a lot can be automated. For those that know everything and admin can do, it will just free up time for more impactful EA type work. Our job is not going anywhere anytime soon. I've said for years that AI will not replace what I do, but people who don't know how to use the AI will be replaced.
To an extent I think so unfortunately but like everyone said to fully use the administrative assistant position to its fullest there will always need to be a person.
I think there are a lot of things that can be automated and then again there are a lot of things that I do on a daily basis that I don't think can be automated. I'm not surprised that some companies prefer a human as their admin assistant, I assume that is probably true for most companies honest.
