I had a call today where the customer made me repeat my greeting twice, and the moment she heard my voice, she asked to speak to someone else. Before I could respond, she said she’d call back and hung up after waiting 45 minutes. I almost brushed it off, but later saw on her account she had a history of being rude to agents. It made sense then, maybe she didn’t want to speak to someone with an accent like mine. It’s frustrating how some people judge so quickly.

Damn. I’m sorry that happened.

Yeah, it really is part of the customer service life. You get used to the ups and downs over time, it just becomes part of the daily grind.

As an immigrant, I understand how you feel. People often judge me for my accent, and I used to be ashamed of it. A friend reminded me that if someone isn’t culturally aware, that’s their issue, not mine. The world is full of different cultures and experiences; if this is new to the person, that’s okay, that's on them, not you. Sending you good vibes! You got this!

Thank you for your comment. It really helps to know I’m not alone in this. I always remind myself that English isn’t even my first language, yet I’ve learned it well, so I’m definitely ahead of those people.

Yikes, I'm really sorry you went through that. But it does sound like it's all about her and nothing about you. Some people are just chronically unpleasant and you can't let those kinds of people dictate your mood!

Absolutely! Learning not to let others’ behavior ruin your mood is such a powerful skill. If they act out, that’s on them, not on you. Keeping that mindset helps a lot.

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

Back when I was getting started in the food world, I worked flipping burgers at In-n-Out. A man came in and said the burgers he had gotten weren’t right. He dumped the food on the counter and then he started throwing them back behind the counter. We gave him a refund and then his demeanor completely changed. He was calmer and he told us to have a great day as he left us to clean up the mess he made.
