There's just no pleasing those patients. They're the worst, and while I can empathize to an extent, some of the behavior is just flat out inexcusable. When I deal with one of them or am just having a bad day in general, I force myself to laugh, usually by revisiting one of the stupid videos I've saved on IG. Always makes me feel better.
It’s work, and it just makes me that much more grateful for the kind patients. That is how some people are, regardless of whether they are with me or not.
Sometimes we have to remember that a patient who is being difficult and snapping that’s just who they are sick or not. I have asked the patient why are you snapping at me? Of course, the patient said I didn’t know that I was doing that! That stopped the snapping! You sound like a very nice person and I’m sorry you took this home with you! Just do your very best with your patient and when you leave the building, leave it behind you! Get in your car, put your play list on and drive home feeling good!
I like tat answer.
Spend those little time in his room as you can and get used to it because this is not the first time you're an encounter that I would say that the best nurses I've seen encounter this is people that snap back at them and just haul them you know if you're going to talk to me s***** I'm going to talk to you back s***** and when they respond with humility they realize that.

I have found in my 30 years of nursing, that the rudest patients are usually the scared & lonely. It's hard sometimes to get past that behavior but I try & put myself in their shoes. Sometimes they are just nasty & entilted,I make sure I follow up on all their concerns & complaints until they know & trust that I will do what I say I will.
It takes time to build a trusting relationship with patient’s who have been treated poorly by other healthcare workers, hence why they are so rude and uncooperative. However, like a few people said in these comments, if you try to put yourself in their shoes and understand where they are at in life, its easier to empathize with these people. Just keep smiling and making them feel comfortable like you already are and soon enough they will start to trust and open up to you. May not always work out, but its better than just labeling them as “the problem patient”. Good luck to you.
