I hate speaking about my personal life at work but it seems everyone wants to be so involved. Am I the weird one?

I hate it too. I just answer politely and make them think they know more about me than they do.

They are probably just trying to be friendly and not come across as cold, etc.

It’s a byproduct of people not having social lives. Work becomes socialization and the lines of professionalism become blurred. I refuse to speak about my personal life lest anything be used against me.

like

Thank you for saying this. Work is work, not a playground or a social club and I wish more people understood this 🤦‍♀️

I am in house on a small legal team so most of my colleagues are not lawyers, and it’s my job to both support them and protect the company from them simultaneously. I do talk about my kids and vacation and such and other life events, but I am also very cautious about what I say and how much I tell them. I am also very careful about what I put in writing over Teams or email - some of them put way too much in writing and I keep it short and sweet and act like everything is discoverable either to my boss/the company or in an investigation.

like

Yes. They’ll take it that you don’t like them. You don’t have to tell them the truth, just keep track of any falsehoods…

There’s a way to join these discussions without giving too much away.

Most people aren’t actually trying to make friends, they just want to be nice and engaged. I’m a pretty socialable person and I do think it helps me frame my interactions when I know a bit about you personally. I don’t need to know too much but it’s a way to bond and build relationships, even in a work environment.

Tell me about your dog, where you like to grab dinner, one of your hobbies. I don’t care what it is, just make you seem like a real person not another cog in the machine.

like

Interesting. I’m the totally opposite. I’m constantly talking about my personal life. Even about being in AA.

A1 my reason is that i dont trust colleagues the way I trust friends from other chapters in my life

I need some insight. Just had a phone interview for a management job in healthcare. I felt comfortable and felt like the interview went well. I ask questions and the ACNO said that I asked great questions. They said that they had other interviews to do as well but said the next step is to bring me in for an on-site interview (I live 1,000 miles away) and that the recruiter would be reaching out. Thoughts? I’m going to drive myself crazy analyzing everything.

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?
