It’s also discriminatory to the superior pet, cats... who have much better things to do than watch you work all day. 😉
We have a “pettiquite” policy where dog have to be tied up to their owners desks/ always on a leash. Maybe reach out to your HR and see if you could implement something like that?
I second this ☝️
You could also work on that fear on your end, maybe with the help of someone. Life is more enjoyable with fewer fears. Especially those dragged along from the past.
I’m the same as far as not liking dogs in the office. No trauma here. I don’t dislike dogs but I’m uncomfortable around them, particularly when it’s not my choice to be around them.
Owners: “don’t worry! He’s friendly” As their dog puts its paws on me, my clothes, it’s nose in my crotch. 😩
Same. Dogs are sweet and lovely until they drool all over me/my shoes/my desk area. Some can’t help it, I know. But if you choose to have a drool-y dog and accept those consequences, understand you can only accept those consequences for yourself and not others, and not everybody would make the same choice as you.
It gives me a lot of anxiety on certain days knowing a lot of them are coming in and will be running around under our desks. But every time I show any hint of me being uncomfortable around the dogs, people laugh it off and say THEIR dog is fine/the best/etc and imply that I’m weird for not liking having all these cute dogs around. Disclaimer - The biggest dog belongs to our head of HR. I’m considering finding a new job/agency that do not have this policy. But is that good enough of reason to leave?
Please don’t. Talk to them! I am a pet/dog lover and I’m in favour of office dogs, however, if I were your colleague and you approached me politely, I’d totally understand
I feel the same way on “bring your kid to work” day
Most kids do make it to the toilet though and it’s usually 1day.
Agreed- I have 2 dogs yet I don’t think the workplace is for any animal. There’s a ton of people that are allergic to dogs and cats.... also, they can be so disruptive and distracting. Let’s keep our furry friends at home.
If there are certain days when dogs are permitted in the office, people who do not want to work around them should be permitted to work from home those days. That said, when my dog is in the office he is tied up at my desk and not permitted to roam around — I do not understand the dog owners who think they don’t need to watch their animal if it is in a public place. One of the few times my dog was free after hours when some colleagues and I were having drinks in an old office, we ended up in the doggy ER because he found a tray of chicken wings in the kitchen. so it’s for the dog’s safety also. Offices are not pet-proofed.
Second this. Tell HR you are going to work offsite when there are dogs in the office. I don’t care why you don’t like it, you shouldn’t have to put up with being afraid at work. I am a dog person, but I believe people are more important animals.
I think the dog policy is aggressive and ass-kissing to employees. Not everyone loves dogs, and you get no say in the matter. I like dogs, but I don’t think they belong in offices. Especially when they pee on the wall right outside your office, as one did where I worked. The smell never went away
Such a sigh of relief to hear similar sentiments and realizing it’s not just me! Thanks for the ideas. Makes me a little bit more comfortable bringing this up with HR :)
I’ve always been curious about having a dog, but sadly office dogs have turned me into a bit of a dog-hater. Actually, more of a dog-owner hater, because nothing highlights the presence or absence of discipline like how you handle your animal. And while there are a few shining good examples, most people are shitty, lazy, least-amount-of-effort pet owners. That works okay with cats, but not with dogs. And office dogs are usually there because the owner doesn’t want to deal with the costs and hassles of walkers and sitters, not because their dog is a joy to have around.
Bear Mace one or two and I guarantee people will keep their dogs away.
I don’t know why bringing pets to work became not just acceptable, but a “perk”. Now, it is the expectation for some reason. I understand working a job and having a pet can be difficult. So can working a job and having a child. Or working a job and having a life, tbh. But my god why do I have to deal with your animals at my job? And in the already-ridiculous open floor plan. If I can go a full workday without a drink, you can make it a few hours without your dog.
My office allows dogs but the dogs have to be well trained, cannot run around on their own and they are not allowed in the kitchen, bathrooms or conference rooms. 99.9% of the dogs in my office are super friendly and well behaved.
Our office is dog friendly and we had someone on our team bring in his new puppy. Super cute but my God I spent so much time (as a dog lover) stressed that his dog was gonna eat something or pee or worse and it impacted his productivity. There's no pet policy for how to say, hey, your dog is adorable but it's impacting your work and maybe you need to be more responsible. Ugh. Op- definitely see if you can wfh on these days!!
