You want to evolve into a conceptual sr art director -> ACD (Art) -> CD. And you will still be up late and working hard, but fretting over different details. Also, most places these days want player coaches. Meaning they want you to come up with the big ideas, but also be able to roll up your sleeves and design and mock up. Maybe the juniors still do all the production work, but you still have to oversee it, and catch the quality control issues.
Creative strategy would also be a cool evolution. And making the switch early is the right way to go. You’re not coming up with the big ideas, but you’re creating the Ven diagram for where the big idea should hit. And you’re making sure that the creatives are on target with the strat you build.
My heart’s no longer in it, I need to be the driving force in shaping the idea generation and pushing for the right insight. It’s been a huge bone of contention—someone else calling the shots that I completely disagree with because the vision is incomplete or half-baked.
Not knocking the execution, we need great executors, not enough of those either when details get overlooked or ignored. But the deep thinking and problem solving is where my heart and mind want to be.
