I've never said no to an assignment. That's not how jobs work.
When someone asks me to get them coffee.
No job too small
Serious question OP. Does Wieden do banners?
I hear @GCD and @AD with the "always do what you're asked" commentary, but I think that position overlooks the reality of how creative departments work. Hard work is a pre-requisite, and never be a diva of course, but I think the reality is that once a creative does cruddy assignment X, they are looked at as the type of creative who will do X, and this any time X comes up - boom, PMs turn to that creative. I don't think anyone really minds doing X now and again, but if you become an X guy, you end up doing X to the power of X, and in so doing you don't get put on Y or Z. Of course you can do X once, and then try to avoid doing it more often than that, but being clear eyed about the process at the beginning and trying to set limits then is only, i think, an act of self-preservation. Simply saying "no", as OP suggests, is a jerk move. But I think setting limits is fine. That said, I think it's more important to avoid bad accounts and crappy types of requests more than a particular format (i.e social). Like I try to turn down any softcore pharma request off the bat. Ditto really diva like, poorly managed client requests (i.e drop everyting, we need 100 social lines by noon).
I'll take all of the shit jobs you've got. People don't wanna do it? No problem. Give it to me. But don't make that the only thing I'm getting. If I'm working on the shit, it better be in addition to something that can actually help my book, too. My only ground rule is don't screw me any harder than this industry is already designed to.
There are no small parts, only small actors.
JC1, who's asked you to get them coffee? I've never seen that in my career, just curious.
And I'd love to see someone who's a full-time employee refuse to do something job related even if menial or unpleasant. Especially when asked by their boss/someone senior.
Won't work on Cigarettes, vitamins, junk food or shit like promoting high fructose, corn syrup, anything that demeans women or people of color or other ethnicities. And I won't work with or for nasty commanding people.
Strategist 1 has a good point. There are some clients I wouldn't work on. Pharma being prime among them. But within a client I've agreed to work on, I'm not too proud. And when things get really busy, I'll often jump in and try to take some of the shit work off my teams' plates because I know I can crank it out in a few minutes
I haven't said "no" exactly but I've spoken with the person about why someone else (a Jr) would be better suited to do it and why my time should be focused elsewhere.
I'm fortunate to work for an agency with a moral filter that's essentially aligned with my own. So I never say no on those grounds. But if it's not something that is helping me move towards my goals then I make I sure I don't do it too long. And I try to learn something from it that can help me navigate around similar scenarios in the future. Also @GCD1 - Nazis had a job. That's not a good approach. And I hope that's not the expectation you have on your team.
Not so much tasks...you have to jump in as needed from time to time. However, tasks for accounts I despise or left is another story
Said no to working on an oil account
Also when people ask me to schedule time for them to meet with me... like hard no. The calendar works both ways bro
Nothing over 20s. Fuck those creatives, a banner works better and we can prove it while they can't
@RGA 1 As I clarified, I wouldn't accept a job working on a client I have moral issues with. But once I'm in, I'm not to proud to do the drudge work
Adaptive social posts. No thanks.
I straight up say in my interviews that I will not work on social or banner ads ever again.
Yes sir/mam how high. Unless it's pharma.
