I have a matter that recently became active again after a slow period. Unfortunately, the team dynamics are difficult, and one associate in particular has a reputation for extremely challenging behavior—confrontational, and generally unpleasant to work with. I also don’t find the subject matter especially interesting. I’ve been trying to reduce my involvement, but I’m concerned partners might perceive it as a lack of commitment. Any advice on how to navigate this situation?

Hello! What is the best way to structure a discovery call for SaaS sales? e.g. share a deck, only focus on their use case (current state, goals, pain, etc.), share a story, etc. Lastly, how do you go further than surface level, like if they mention they are having issues with xyz, which is usually a symptom of the problem and not the problem itself. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I have an MBA from the University of Chicago, not that it matters much in sales. I have always been in a consulting role but I think I can make more in sales. I have a competitive personality and I am bored.

How many of you biglaw associates are on your grind trying to recruit people to earn a big referral bonus? I’m treating it like a side gig. Ironic that my firm does not give associates any kind of origination credit. If they took the same philosophy with business development, I would direct my efforts there too.!

Question: do y’all really love this stuff and understand it? Or are you all on the “fake it til you make it” wave? I ask because I’m in a specialty group under the Corporate umbrella and many of the partners and some senior associates are extremely smart and clearly enjoy this stuff. Some even do “night time reading” to catch up on the recent laws. I, on the other hand, cannot wrap my head around it most of the time and would rather not waste energy doing it. Is it just me? What do i do? Quit?

Been unhappy and stuck at my big law firm for a couple years. Mentor set me up with a secondment with a client. Still trying to feel out client, but mentor is trying to convince me to take in-house position if it comes up. I do not like the town the client is located in, and I’m not sure of the salary. Am I kindly being pushed out? I like the work well enough in the secondment but the location is a non-starter.

Need help from the Hivemind. I am a rising 4th year who has only been at my firm for a little over a year (after a few clerkships). I like my firm well enough, and the partners I work with like me a lot, but I’ve learned that Biglaw is not the life for me and want to get out ASAP. I’m applying to a Fed agency that I’m really excited about, but the application requires a reference from your current supervisor. I haven’t told the firm I’m thinking about leaving.
