Need help from the Hivemind. I am a rising 4th year who has only been at my firm for a little over a year (after a few clerkships). I like my firm well enough, and the partners I work with like me a lot, but I’ve learned that Biglaw is not the life for me and want to get out ASAP. I’m applying to a Fed agency that I’m really excited about, but the application requires a reference from your current supervisor. I haven’t told the firm I’m thinking about leaving. How would you handle this?

I had this happen and asked a senior associate who I trust if I could use his name. Not as ideal as a partner, but I got the job, so it worked out. And he kept my secret until I was ready to disclose it myself.

I should say that I think they will feel blindsided if I tell them I’m leaving because I work really hard and try to always present a positive attitude. I don’t think they know how unhappy I am. I don’t want to get marked and treated differently once they realize I’m looking for a way out, especially if this job doesn’t work out.

I had something similar. My supervising partner would have marked me as well. I spoke with a partner in a different office who worked with me on one of my larger cases and I explained the situation. He served as a great reference and has always been quiet about it.

Howdy…I need a sanity check! As part of my previous role, I reported security non-compliance and gross security misrepresentations. For my valiant efforts I was laid off (despite being a protected whistleblower) and my reports were buried. Everything I did was in line with my responsibilities. I was extremely concerned that systems housing personal credit data on all US consumers were not adequately protected. I essentially risked my job to protect data and I’m not sure if it mattered.

Getting worried about hours. Last year I was really low (first year associate), I’ve had really good reviews so far and no negative feedback. How do I know Big-Law is not for me?

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?
