Question: do y’all really love this stuff and understand it? Or are you all on the “fake it til you make it” wave? I ask because I’m in a specialty group under the Corporate umbrella and many of the partners and some senior associates are extremely smart and clearly enjoy this stuff. Some even do “night time reading” to catch up on the recent laws. I, on the other hand, cannot wrap my head around it most of the time and would rather not waste energy doing it. Is it just me? What do i do? Quit?

I enjoy the law but also fake it til I understand it. I like my practice area so it’s not a huge burden for me to take a quick scroll through law news in my industry to see what’s going on. I don’t spend more than 15-30 minutes doing that at a time though. Do you enjoy your specialty corporate practice? If not, then maybe think about finding out what would create some level of interest and engagement for you

Which practice? I’m in a specialty lit practice and feel the same way. This practice area is some peoples’ entire lives, and I am so disinterested.

Just my two cents, but you probably understand way more than you realize. The issue is that your constantly dealing with experts in your field on a daily basis so it can feel like you don’t know/understand a lot when comparing yourselves to them. If you hate what you do, then stop. However, if it’s a function of you not feeling as up to speed as them, don’t sweat it. It takes time. I’m 10 years out and I’ve lead some really complicated deals, but I still feel stupid when I get on the phone with certain partners (y’know those partners that no one can remember ever being associates they’ve been around so long). It’s called the practice, not mastery, of law. Keep practicing.

As a senior who probably comes across as I understand it, it takes a long time. I didn’t really start to understand financial concepts (I’m in finance) till I was taking the lead on deals 5th year and up. Every year I look back on my old self and see how many mistakes she made/how much she didn’t know. It doesn’t come naturally, you have to put a lot of work in and play the long game. All that to say, I wouldn’t give up yet.

I do sales for a major engineering firm. Focused on new business and exploring new markets. Last year I was in the top 50% for order intake, and first in number of projects won along with number of new customers. I think this is extraordinary given the effort it takes to win new business.

For next year my goal increased by 2.5X, and less of what I bring in counts towards that target. I really enjoy my job but I will essentially be getting a large pay cut. Lost in what to do besides quit??

And how should the negotiation start? Through phone calls or emails? Didn’t use recruiter for this position, so I don’t know what is the process here.

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.
