I have a project of making an Instagram account for local students, so they can sell their own paintings. On the other side, I'm thinking of adding a space for people to know about local painting events so they can get information about them easy. Is it better to have one account with both things or two accounts, one for each topic?

I would do both in the same place! You can probably find a way for the two ideas to merge too.. maybe there is a local show with student work for sale? If you have one captive audience, I would put both things in one place.

I do do it in the same place as well to make it easier!

I kind of disagree wtih the two comments above. Why not diversify and create two different accounts? You can tag the other account and get a diverse set of followers across the two different accounts.
