Hi, Need some suggestions on career switch. I'm currently working as a firmware developer in Radar SW (2yrs of experience), recently I got a opportunity to switch as pre/post silicon validation engineer at Qualcomm with good package and RSU's. I would like to switch. Any thoughts on my decision? Thanks.

It’s not good pay! The best way to get better pay as a CSR is at bigger well known companies. They’re always hiring. Someone’s gotta answer the phone. Most are WFH.
Most big companies require minimum of 2 yrs prior experience in customer service, retail or service industry.
In Fortune 500 call centers like Netflix or Amazon, CSRs earn $19-21/hr to start and that doesn’t include shift differential & holiday or weekend pay. If you know a second language like Spanish and it’s required, you get paid more.
CSRs to be successful at big companies need to have flexibility to work a variety of shift assignments including nights/weekends/holidays. Especially if they want to WFH.
Fintechs and banks like Goldman Sachs, Brex, Affirm, American Express, Wells Fargo, Chase, Carta etc have customer service teams. Bank customer reps use titles like “operations specialist” or “cash management representative” and based in the bank’s Operations division. It’s typically 9-5 and no weekends.
Other roles to look at is collections specialist in law offices or other businesses where they struggle getting paid by their customers.
Typically if it’s a customer service role that has “analyst” in title they may require a college degree but “specialist” or “representative”usually does not require a degree to perform.
Honestly get a new job. If you haven’t gotten a raise in a year, do you want to get one only bc you asked for it?
I don’t know the market for CSRs, but if you are in the US $26k annually sounds pretty low. I would recommend advocating for a raise and also preparing your resume and start job hunting to see if you can move somewhere else where you will be more valued.
If you have a performance review coming up, raise this and ask about the possibility of merit increase. If you don’t have a review coming up, you could request one. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself
Definitely bring a pay raise up at your next one on one meeting with your supervisor. I’d recommended sending an email to give them a heads up before the meeting that you want to add it to your topics of discussion. You need to do research (Glassdoor, salary.com, fishbowl, etc) on what the market rate for your position/experience is. Have a list of your performance/skills and examples of “above and beyond” ready to talk about during the one on one meeting. Find out if there is a regular company compensation increase process as well.
I agree with everyone else that $26k annually for aFT CSR seems low. Simultaneously look at other companies as well for a back up (healthcare companies are always hiring CSRs and most are fully remote nowadays with pay starting strong $40k)
Good luck 👍🏾 get that pay raise!!
I am currently Remote and I’m OMNI (chat, email, and phone) and I work for an e-commerce company that provides customer service for consumers like (Giorgio Armani Beauty, Lancôme, Chanel, Pandora…etc). Also, I’ve been in customer service for 18 years.
Your pay is really low. 26k is only about $13.50/hr. What state do you live in? It looks like you’re making minimum wage. With 18yrs experience in CS you should be making twice that.
Go to Glassdoor and look at the salaries for your company. The bottom range is $35K.
****UPDATE**** I requested my annual performance review… I was informed that, in order to receive a raise, you must reach a score of 3.0.
I got a score of 2.9.
I was .1 away from a raise. My supervisor later advised me that if I HAD received a raise, it may have been 10 or even 50cents. 🤦🏻♀️
Unfortunately this job, is a disaster. So, I’ve applied to at least 100 other jobs this week so far. Any advice on getting a new job right now? 🙂
Be persistent and make sure you don’t jump too soon- wait for the right thing and it will be worth it. Be patient
I am in Texas, and it amounts to $12.50 per hour.
I’ve performed in different customer service positions, throughout my 18 years of experience.
I have not always been a CSR, I have been in retail customer service (cashier and receptionist). I was also a department manager at a grocery store. Anyone who has worked in retail though, knows that the main responsibility is customer service.
This is my first position as a CSR, remotely.
You should aim for team lead or supervisor roles in CS. All of that experience is applicable.
