I have elementary aged kids and a low stress government job, but it requires me to be in office until 5. I’m really wanting to be able to pick them up earlier than 5:30, take them to activities, etc. Has anyone found a way to make private practice work where you can log off around 3/4 and block family time until early evening? Former litigator but open to switching practice areas

I’m in biglaw and do this most days. I can’t always block the time, but it works like 80% of days. It does mean that I’m back online every night after the kids go to sleep, but that’s ok.

P1 what is your practice area? I am a senior associate in transactional doing this right now but am worried about whether it will be possible as a partner.

I don’t typically work from 3:30-8:30 when my kids are around 3-4 days a week. My husband drives them around the other days. I’m PT BigLaw. I find private practice to be extremely flexible—the bigger the better. Get your work done and no one really cares when or how.

Maybe twice a week? My practice has a seasonality to it so it really depends. I’ve billed like 95 hours this month and really only worked a handful of hours each day. Today I spent the morning at the beach (not my vacation). I billed 200 hours one month during the busy season. I’m in a niche transactional and regulatory practice.

Private practice in medium sized firm, I can usually log off around 4 and then back on once baby is asleep. However, I'm doubting I'll make partner fast at this rate BUT I am okay with this for now.

Consider in-house roles too. Flexibility has been great for me (2 kids, 16 yrs into the working and mothering gig). Spent years leaving early and logging back in later. Progressed professionally. Also have had incredible support from female colleagues.

For me, in-house was the move.

Look for hybrid jobs that have good benefits and policies (unlimited PTO, etc), they tend to be more chill with flexibility. Then get a sense of the team during the interview process. I started with 9-5:30 hours but quickly asked/told my colleagues that starting earlier and leaving earlier was better for me and no one cared. So I’m at the office around 8:15-4:15 (3 days a week). It makes sense because half our company is in Europe so my mornings are much busier anyway. Technically I’m available to log back on later but I rarely have to.

Since it’s private there is a lot of room to create and build from the best practice. lmk if you are interested or know someone needs help. Thanks!
