I have owned and run my personal injury law firm for 10 years now. I have another lawyer and 3 full time staff w me. One part time staff. My mother also helps out here and there. Lately I’ve had a lot of thoughts of closing up the office and working at a firm. This is not because I don’t think I’ve been “successful” but more the daily grind of running a business outside of being a lawyer can really get exhausting at times. Wanted to see what others thought, esp those more experienced lawyers?

I also think at this point in my career, I could probably get a good job working at a plaintiffs firm. Have a whole book of business to bring and probably net more money than I do now without dealing with all the stuff that comes with running and maintaining a business.

The grass is always greener. You may make the jump and be unable to recover. Have you looked at apps and office managers to help you with the load?

You may want to consider a practice administrator (older and experienced paralegal that handles administrative tasks and day-to-day operations) or upgrading your associate to a managing attorney role so you can free up your time.

I think you have your figure out what you’re really passionate about and what’s important to you. I run a multi silo firm. PI and other areas. Have since 2001.

I love the business of law and over the last 15 years I’ve focused on the business side with significant investments of time and money to learn how to run it like a real business.

Depending on your market and the total value of what you’re bringing to the table you could probably get a fantastic deal at a larger well developed firm that gives you autonomy, the opportunity to lawyer at the highest level, and the potential for partnership that plays to your strengths and takes the stuff you no longer want to do off of you. Partnership is a succession planning tool that benefits the exiting partners but also would benefit you tremendously bc you get the best of both worlds.

Obviously choosing the right firm and doing a detailed written agreement are key.

Happy to talk further offline if you like.

Sounds like you need a partner to help you run things

I think that woudl really depend on what kind of losses you might be taking by closing up shop. Generally speaking there is a lot more money to be made when you are running your own business, making your own rules, setting your own schedule, etc.

I have a dumb question... I have my first jury trial coming up in a few months. It's a 3-day auto accident trial. I'm the plaintiff attorney. My question is, should I have my client present the entire three days, or am I okay to tell them that they're fine to leave after they testify?

What's your preference for plaintiff's side? Steady pay at approximately $120k with no bonuses, or a base salary of $70k plus a cut of what you close over a minimum threashold? Midwest-ish market. In both situations, you get a cut of what you bring in.

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

I'm a 6th year attorney in NYC. Strictly defense work; started out with the City Law Dept, did a year and a half of med mal/construction, and for past year and a half have been at a well known defense firm working on high exposure construction accident cases. Contemplating taking a couple interviews at plaintiff's firms to see if there is a good fit. Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)

For Plaintiff's attorneys, how big is your caseload? What kind of cases are the majority of them and are they in suit? I am currently handling 150+ mostly MVAs and premise liability cases, just about all in suit, (on top of about 10 DUIs and other small traffic matters) and I feel like I'm drowning and looking to jump ship. What is normal/to be expected? In NYC area if that matters
