I’m a big fan of Cabernets from the Hall family of wines. They’re delicious, consistent, reliable and high quality.
Hall is great cab ready to drink today. Not as amazing at aging. But for a gift, a great choice.
People’s palates vary widely - i would either get a sense of what each of them like, or get them a gift card to a local wine shop that can help them choose something. This also helps if they themselves don’t drink (or don’t drink wine), they can always use the gift card to purchase for someone else.
Zinfandel is always a winning wine. Bedrock or Heitz/Ink grade, really nice examples. If you’re going with french wine, something like Famille Perrin is consistent, associated to Beaucastel, and available at a range of price points. Some of the Bordeaux satellites or 4th/5th growths are also very accessible.
Ledson is another good choice.
Tannats from Uruguay & Virginia!
- Garzon Reserva Tannat
- Pisano Reserva Tannat
- Michael Shaps Tannat
- Arterra Tannat
Otherwise I love Nebbiolo based wines like Barolo and Barbaresco.
Virginia Tannats are mostly from South American old world variants rather than the European Hybrids (old world varieties were killed off and only survived in South America).

Oh, and sometimes I like to go to a local cheese monger and have them create a box of cheeses to add with wine, if that’s in your budget. They usually make it in a nice presentation box. Good luck!
