I have through my own efforts brought in 3 clients that in total have created around 6M in fees. As a VP I am only eligible to receive 20% of the fee. My base is $150k.

(For context I work at a LMM no name boutique)

Our ceo is incompetent and there’s really only one partner here who I get value out of working with. They offered me a partner position but I don’t want to “buy in” and sign all these non compete agreements. I’m embarrassed of the ceo. Should I just start my own firm?

I understand that LMM M&A shops are completely commoditized but somehow I manage to keep bringing in deals on a pretty consistent basis and have a handful of others in the pipeline. I just don’t see the point of working with a group where I don’t get to control the brand or have a say in people they hire when I could do my own thing with a colleague of mine and have more control + upside on the deals I bring to the table.

I need to do this honestly. Unfortunately I don’t have many mentors in IB and have figured out most of this myself.

Nice work. Did you fully originate + then execute with no help from the brand?

20% of the fee is not hugely below market all the way up to MD level, especially if you are a VP - the majority of firms at that level you’ll get a bit of credit and a push upwards.

You’ll have more upside, but also more risk + operational burden.

You’d be better off moving up in brand and up the deal size, and keep pushing onto MD. Once your book and deal sheet is big post an MD slot that’s when the really successful individuals leave to start their own firms.

And yes ! Full originated myself absolutely no help in pitching. On the execution side I used the one partner that is helpful who really only pitched in on diligence and the initial negotiation phases but it is something I could’ve handled myself. Used the analyst team who I hired and trained to support me as well.

Only if you hire me as your counsel lol

If you give me a good price sure haha

So you got $1.2M for bringing in three client, as a VP, and ur mad?

I’m not at a BB I’m at a boutique no name LMM place. If I left they’d have essentially no ability to execute.

It was 3 closed deals over the course of 20 months. 3M, 1.8M, 1.2M.

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…

What are realistic expectations for 3rd Year Analyst / Direct Promote Associate bonus range at a BB? Personally would be pretty unhappy to take a pay cut between 2nd and 3rd year…

Long story short - was lured into an opportunity to do BD for a large PE PortCo… better work/life balance, but honestly miss the deal cycle.

Anyone know of open VP1 opps right now?

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.

Interesting all the noise about these PPT, my take:

The pandemic took all the upside of an IB analyst life (client meetings in person, fancy trips, suit up, worshiped at networking events) and left all the juniors with the downside (long hours, monkey-like type of job, aggressive work environment).

Not that the complaints are not sort of legitimate but you may need to revise the decision-making process that led you to accept a return offer. Specially if you were looking for less hours.
