I interviewed at a firm where the partner spent the entire time bragging about how little sleep he gets. He actually said if you’re not averaging 5 hours a night, you’re not working hard enough. That was the moment I knew the culture was going to be a nightmare. Why do firms think burnout is a selling point instead of a giant red flag?

If they allowed themselves to reflect on how much of their life they’ve already wasted working and doing nothing else, the grief would be crushing. They brag about being toxic to protect themselves from realizing the truth of that pain.

100% agree A1

Bwahaha, if you need to work that many hours, you obviously aren’t valuable enough to charge a higher billable rate. Sounds like sweatshop where they have to bill so many hours to make up for low rates.

like

I dunno. The firms where I worked the most hours also had the highest billable rates. More money, more expectations.

He clearly feels like he works very hard and that is a source of pride for him. Let him live the life he wants. Even if that would be a miserable life for you, he did you a favor by being open and honest about his own views so you can now be sure it’s not the right place for you.

Yeah this is twisted

I would have picked his brain further and found a creative way to ask why he felt it necessary to share that with me!

Do recruiters and Hiring Managers actually review and read resumes? Also tech companies that sell SaaS, what is it with the requirements of having 10 years or more if technical sales experience? Also the ramp up period is not realistic. Average sales cycle for a reputable SaaS provider is 12-24 months. How on earth a start up can state that their ramp up period is 90 days? The company hasn’t had any new sales either. Start up CEO’s… be realistic or seek enough funding to operate.

I joined a new team and have noticed something off with my Director over the last months (slurring speech, no show to calls or even full days of work). I finally asked a colleague about it today because I’m concerned about my Director. She confirmed that she’s noticed the same over the last few years, but no one ever says anything. In confidence she told me she can often smell alcohol. How can I help? I feel helpless. I’ve already lost someone to addiction and I can’t ignore this. Any advice?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
