I just accepted a job with a V20. This will by my 4th firm in 6 years. Nervous I am now a job jumper and it will hurt my career long term. Each job I was well liked and on partnership track. In six years I have made the following moves:
(1) small firm (4 attorneys) I spent 3 years as a paralegal but 1.5 as an attorney after law school; (2) medium size firm (60 attorneys) spent 1.8 years; (3) large regional firm (150 attorneys) spent 3.4 years here; and now moving on to a V20 no change in class.

Maybe this opinion will run counter to most here, but I actually don’t see this as a typical job hopper profile. You went from small firm paralegal to a V20 associate, and that generally doesn’t happen without a series of strategic moves. Well done.

I’d stay put for a few years and not overthink it. IMO, over the long term, a strong run at the V20 will matter a lot more than the number of firms it took to get there.

100% agree with this

20-30 years ago, people would care about this. In today's everyone is a mercenary world, absolutely no one cares.

In fact, you're very likely leaving substantial money on the table not exploring hopping around ever 3 or so years.

FYI - I'm c/o 2021 and have had 5 legal jobs since then and I'm making more now than I was as an V20 associate in house.

I basically did this. Your movements are upward and not across/downward. Should be fine

When the time comes, I think you wouldn't have any trouble spinning this as a series of strategic moves you made to reach your goal of being at a V20 firm. I think job hopping looks more questionable when you have a lot moves between peer firms with short tenures at each firm. Kudos on your successful moves!

I would hire you. This is a rational, very explainable progression. Congrats. What a job hopper resume look like is a bunch of similar firms one after another with no discernible explanation for the moves

Job hopping is when people are lateraling around between peers, or worse, consistently moving downward. These are unambiguously upward moves. You’re fine.
