Just be honest with them, you’re not an expert in DE&I so you can’t advise on these matters. That will make them stop.
Thus
Really depends what your comfortable with sister. Some may see this as an opportunity for dawah and being an early adopter of setting up a culture for future Muslim hires. Some may disagree. Do isthakra, seek Allahs help and continue with what you feel is best for you! Goodluck, May Allah make it easy and choose what’s best for you.
Just a thought - this is really at the heart of da’wah. Allah (SWT) has entrusted you with the opportunity to be a voice and representative for the message of Islam. If certain topics start to feel too political or extreme, it might help to have a go-to response ready to gently set your boundaries.
That said, the part about you doing “free work,” especially when it’s coming from HR, is not okay. Your time and contributions should be respected and valued. You might consider politely pushing back by asking for clarity on expectations and whether there’s compensation or formal recognition for the work being requested. Setting that precedent early can really help protect your boundaries moving forward.
Say no. You weren’t hired to be a diversity consultant—you were hired to build.
Plus this
I see it as an opportunity to share real representation of us and dawah like others mentioned. It gives us say on the narrative but at the same time I understand the point of unpaid work. You have to assess how much extra work it is, vs your perspective of whether you are looking at it as a Muslim who wants to do this or a worker who is being asked for unpaid work.
I work at a startup and none of this never comes up. Other people, not hr, say Eid Mubarak/Ramadan Mubarak...not us (the Muslims)
Startups are VERY different from corporations. You'll be fine, no one will bother you...they might be more accepting.
Well first off, mabrook times a million! May Allah bless you with success in all your endeavors. Ameen! I’ll just say it is a great opportunity to educate colleagues, however it is up to you to set a healthy boundary. IA you can accept or decline as you wish as you know your needs best. May Allah make everything easy for you!
I dont see why you cant do it as long as it doesnt impede your bottom line
Start ups are so busy that I don’t think this will come up. But if it does, just respectfully decline.
If it is possible, form with other coworkers a DEI inclusion group you can call it Muslims at Workplace , or any other name
