I just had my second baby and I accepted an in-house role for after my maternity leave. I’ll be leaving a part-time role at a law firm. I wasn’t very fulfilled and struggled to meet my hours in my 3 working days per week. I’m suddenly very nervous about going back to work full-time after leave, though. Anyone have any thoughts or insights on WLB in-house vs a part-time law firm setup? I was told the in-house role will rarely require evening or weekend work, FWIW.

I think part time at a law firm is a way better gig than full time in house. Being unfulfilled matters, but was the last thing on my mind when I had very small children. Those are the years where you tread water professionally and pour yourself into your family. Once they’re in elementary school, you have more space and time to think about your career. I know you’re looking for reassurance, but I have trouble understanding why someone would make this choice.

This has been my experience. I’m fully remote and PT in BigLaw. I can’t imagine a more flexible job. Colleagues are in all time zones. I step away to be with my kids whether I want to.

I think you’ll very likely find this works well for you. Most in-house roles are SO much more chill.

like

What will you be doing in-house? I think some in-house roles are more demanding than others.

It depends on the in house role. I have a great boss in house and its way better than big law or the small firm I worked at a decade ago. My boss allows me to adjust my schedule when my kids are sick etc. The extra comp allows me more flexibility with getting cleaning ladies, food delivery services (as i like to cook), etc. I'm also able to save more for my future, i.e., I get a 401k match (never did at firms), hsa still, etc. I, however, started before I had my son. He is in daycare (as I didnt think we needed a nanny) and has been sick countless times within my first months back. I would have felt uncomfortable taking time off if I just started at the company -- despite having sick time. My company let's you use your sick time though so that is great from my perspective. Do you have a child care plan? Backup child care plan?

I think I have more flexibility with my in house clients than I did at a firm. Im still a transactional attorney and when deals go to close they are busy and all consuming, but my deals are at all different stages and I can plan accordingly (as I only get outside counsel on some of my deals).

I also have a generous vacation policy. I get 5 weeks vacation so that buys even more flexibility.

First congrats on the new job! However, I would not have made that choice. I too have two little ones. They were two under two and I would not go in-house full time from a part-time role. Working full time when you were used to only part time will definitely require more and in a time when you have two kids vying for your attention. Even if they say no weekend and evening work that’s not realistic because you will have to work during those times to catch up on responsibilities because you will need flexibility during regular hours for kid related tasks and you know kids always get sick or there things that come up, so you will absolutely find yourself working at times when you thought you wouldn’t have to just to catch up. Working part time allows for more flexibility and when kids are young such is much needed. Nevertheless good luck to you and you can do it!

like

If you were expressly told that, then why the nervousness?

Just nervous about going full-time with my kids being so little. Maybe I’m just hoping someone can confirm full-time in-house will be better than part-time at a law firm 😂

What were your part time firm hours?

My requirement was about 1200

I just went in house, and I have a 2 year old and 4 year old. I mainly left my firm because I felt unfulfilled. My company has FTO (which means unlimited vacation) but I will say I don’t feel like the job is more flexible than my firm gig. I have way more meetings and my company is in growth mode so it’s busy. However I feel like I’m doing way more meaningful work, and like I’m contributing to something exciting. I’ve been at my company for 2 months now and have only had to work twice after my kids went to sleep in the evening, so for me it’s better than big/mid law but I think if I let myself I could find myself working just as much because I’m actually passionate about it. Good luck! I hope you love it! And if for some reason you don’t, you can always move on and find something new.

I am interviewing for an in-house role that I am really excited about, but they require 5 days in office. I have young kids, and these last few years of remote work and flexibility have really been crucial in helping manage it all. Has anyone else made this transition back to full time in office and do you regret it?

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.
