I am interviewing for an in-house role that I am really excited about, but they require 5 days in office. I have young kids, and these last few years of remote work and flexibility have really been crucial in helping manage it all. Has anyone else made this transition back to full time in office and do you regret it?

I haven't, but no chance I'll ever do it.

Same. They were offering me 3 days in, and a competitive salary. But I couldn’t stomach the idea of the 2 hour round trip commute, and stress of managing work/life in that framework.

Switched for a fully remote role.

like

I told them straight away I would not do more than 2 days a week in office and they ended up being ok with it. I think they would’ve preferred someone in office 5 days a week but adjusted expectations when they were probably getting push back from multiple people.

like

I’m with you. My absolute max would be 2 days per week. Similar reasons as you said. You should feel proud of advocating for yourself and getting a good result!

I feel for you, OP. I turned down a couple of really ideal roles over this, but now I’m glad I did. I landed in a fully remote position and can’t imagine going back in 5 days/week. My life runs so much more smoothly now!

like

I personally would only go 5 days a week if the role allowed me to career pivot and I knew it’d be difficult to get that experience any other way . Even then, I’d be getting my experience and looking for a hybrid or remote role.

I transitioned back to in office full time when I moved in house and I mostly like it. In-house involves so many more meetings and our business is spread around a bunch of facilities so I get to get outside most days. I don’t think I would be nearly as effective at my job if I was regularly working remotely, but that is also probably specific to my relatively archaic industry.

That said, I don’t have kids so the main drawbacks for you probably aren’t there for me.

I have 2 kiddos, Kinder and middle school and the flexibility is so needed. My in house role was “officially” 5 days in the office when I started last year, but was told there was some flexibility. It was helpful onboarding with everyone around and in the office but it got old fast - and I don’t even have a long commute to deal with.

We recently implemented hybrid 3 days in/2 wfh (with still some flexibility as needed) and I’m really glad. I don’t want to go back to mandatory 5 days in ever again.

like

I would definitely bring it up, I’m sure you aren’t only candidate that wants some flexibility. It’s one thing to have a new hire in the office full time for the first few months; there was definitely value for me in doing that to get to know everyone, easily ask questions, and do pop ins. The GC led our first conversation with “yes we’re officially working in the office full time, but we’re professionals so if you need to work from home for a day or two during the week just let us know and we’re working on a hybrid policy.” So, I had some comfort knowing that a policy was coming, it just wasn’t yet there.

I went from fully remote to fully in person with the occasional flexibility, with an 80-100 min daily commute but no kids.
I hated remote work so it might be best for you, but I love being in person. My company says they’re against remote work but a lot of people, when they have some experience go hybrid and as long as they come in 2/3 times a week they’re usually fine.
I would assume that’s ok though, try to ask strategic questions to non-managers to see how that works there

I work for a global company so nobody is that worked up about it - none of my clients even live in the same city as me, so why come in to the office? Our team meets in person on a periodic schedule to cowork and connect, and that’s really valuable but doesn’t have to be that often.

I'm looking to find a job like the Forward Deployed Engineer role Palantir Technologies in the UK.

I have become hooked on finding a job that involves solving the kinds of problems they presented during their interviews. Although I got to the final round my performance anxiety got the better of me (I think I wanted the job a bit too much...). I will reapply after working in a similar company.

Is it "deep tech" / "data science" or "smart enterprise" that they're doing? Any advice welcome.
