I just realized I haven't read a book for fun since the Obama administration. I walked into a bookstore today and realized that my brain is so fried from reading discovery documents that I can’t even focus on a page of fiction anymore. I’ve become someone who only consumes information that is useful or billable, and it makes me feel incredibly shallow. I want to rediscover the person who loved stories before law school turned me into a logic-processing unit. What’s the first book you read that helped you find your non-lawyer brain again?

I love reading so can’t comment on first book but Red Rising was phenomenal. If you like the fantasy genre.

If you like sci fi, three body problem was the first book I read since law school that actually had me excited to read again. Since then have read a bunch of other sci fi books that I enjoy, including the Hyperion series and the children of time series, both which are really interesting and have philosophical underpinnings. I’d also say poetry is a nice way to get back into reading for fun, but which doesn’t require an incredibly long time to get benefits from it, you can take a more bite-sized approach

Oh yeah three body problems is the best!!!!! Yeah

Becoming Good Men - Donnie Griggs

John Grisham

Dungeon Crawler Carl (audiobooks are fantastic).

I love reading for fun still. It’s not fiction but I’m reading “Once Upon a Time” by Elizabeth Beller which is a biography of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy that the Hulu show is based on. Before that I read the Matthew Bruccoli F. Scott Fitzgerald biography, because Fitzgerald is one of my favorite writers.

Been working at my company as a new grad for almost a year, but don’t see myself in the team that I am in (working with Salesforce) for long term. Interested in frontend dev and have been learning on my own. Manager says chase doesnt have much React opportunities. Is it possible to make a switch when I barely have experience? Are there companies that will hire by seeing that I am willing to learn and am interested in frontend even tho I don’t have much experience with it yet?

I only got tested when I traveled out of state for wedding and thought I was at a high(er) risk for exposure. Tested positive but I was already expecting that. (Contd)

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

The partners are pretty great and feedback is constructive which I’m grateful for, but I’m so desperate for a compliment I’ve been saving any scrap of positivity in a folder 😭 it’s December 22 and I haven’t done my Christmas shopping because I don’t feel capable of thinking about it. I need a hug.

Last associates committee meeting is coming up. Partners have asked each associate to come up with... not one... but FIVE marketing ideas. Other than reeling out “we offer competitive pay” in job postings, what are some good ones your firm does?

I’m struggling a bit. If I knew how to market well, I certainly wouldn’t be in this position.
