I know standard notice for resignation is two weeks. But what are the pros/cons to giving more notice than that? Anyone recommend something other than two weeks (and for what reason)? TIA!

Con: Once you’ve given notice, things can be tense. The people you work with may not trust you to handle things or may freeze you out. If that happens, 2 weeks is uncomfortable enough…anything longer could be miserable. They could also ask you to leave the minute you give notice and then you miss out on more than 2-weeks of salary.

Pro: If you have the flexibility, it can be a nice good will gesture. I gave my team a couple months notice that I would be relocating and it was really, really appreciated. That said, I was *very* confident they wouldn’t fire me on the spot, I had an offer for a new job already, & I could financially afford to go without salary until I started the new role.

Leaving my current position in November. Gave my partner notice informally Friday. Been here for over 6+ years and it’s a small firm so I felt the need to not be an asshole. Plus, I’m going to help try and find a suitable replacement. All depends on your circumstances.

I gave three weeks because it was right after Thanksgiving and my new firm didn’t want me to start until after the New Year, so I had more flexibility. I left on good terms and was not concerned about being immediately terminated, and it gave me enough time to wrap up and transfer my case load. It also gave me an extra week’s pay, which was nice

As an employer of a 2-3 attorney firm, I would really appreciate more than 2 weeks notice.

I gave a month and planned to take another 2 weeks off between jobs. I was very confident I wouldn’t get fired on the spot; but also felt that worse case scenario I could handle 6 weeks of no pay. Luckily that didn’t happen. It took about a week for some people to get over the initial sting of me leaving, but they appreciated me staying on a few extra weeks and transitioning all my matters. I left on good terms. I agree it largely depends on your relationship with your firm, but bottom line is I wouldn’t give more than 2 weeks unless you’re confident they will keep you on or you don’t care if you get more time between jobs.

I had to give like 8 weeks notice because I had tons of accrued vacation time that was use it or lose it, and I wouldn’t have been allowed to use it (2 weeks worth) during a very busy time if they didn’t know the situation. All is fine (I’m going to a client so they can’t really be mean to me)

I gave the standard two weeks notice, but said I’d be available thereafter if anyone needed anything. But I already had another position lined up.

What exit opportunities exist for international arbitration? I don’t want to litigate, and am a non-American so government jobs (which seem to be what my colleagues are exiting into) aren’t an option for me. I don’t ever see myself making partner (nor do I want to), and I feel totally stuck.

I am looking to enter big law. I had a clerkship on a state Business Calendar and am a current first year litigation associate where I have prepared for a trial, taken and defended depositions, and have extensive motion writing practice in tech, business, and employment cases. I work with great people. Really can’t say anything bad about my firm in general either. But…I still dislike the entire premise of law firm life, the billable hour, etc.. I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless

I have been a practicing (patent prosecution) lawyer in different firms for about 20 years. I would love to do something more creative but still techie (computers, telecom, apps, etc.). I've always been interested in improving the software that practicing lawyers use (whether patent-specific or not). I am also kind of an academic at heart, but I live in a locale where professorial jobs are pretty limited and we're rooted here now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’m a fifth year associate who is ready to get out of litigation (and private practice altogether). I’ve only ever done professional malpractice (legal, med mal, etc) and feel like those skills will not transfer as well if I had done transactional work. Ideally I would like to transition to something in-house. Any suggestions as to what jobs/industries I could transfer into with only litigation experience?

One of my junior associates recently resigned and I've been trying to make an exit myself for several months now. The job market has been really competitive but I am getting closer to getting a new job and moving on. The firm culture isn't great and work-life balance is non existent. My physical and mental health have been suffering, so I really don't think I could stay. How did you avoid the guilt trips from Partners/Senior staff trying to get you to stay?
