I love working for the government because it feels like I’m truly contributing to society. Knowing that my work helps shape policies, improve public services, or support my community gives me a sense of purpose I never felt in the private sector. That said, I know others have different motivations—maybe it’s the job security, the benefits, or the steady career path. What about you? Do you feel a sense of fulfillment in your government role, or are there other reasons that keep you here?

I’m here for the job security and benefits. The mission is nice, but let’s be real—most of us stay because pensions, paid leave, and stability beat corporate burnout. Passion won’t pay your mortgage, but a solid government salary and benefits will.

One of the best perks I’ve taken advantage of as a parent is flexible scheduling. My agency allows compressed workweeks, so I do 10-hour days and get every other Friday off, which is huge for childcare and appointments. Also, don’t sleep on dependent care FSA benefits—pre-tax dollars for daycare can save you a ton. If your agency offers remote work, use it strategically to avoid commutes on high-stress days.

For me, it’s all about impact. I could make more money elsewhere, but I like knowing my work actually improves lives. When I see a policy I helped draft become reality or hear from residents who benefit from our programs, it makes all the bureaucracy and red tape worth it.

I'm SVP/strategy for a PR agency. I moved into PR, Healthcare, and Strategic Planning only 3 years ago. An agency recruiter is trying to convince me to move into a GSVP account role, assuring me "at that level it's all strategy." (I dont think she understands the words she's using. Or that I'm qualified). But long-term, knowing account roles are so much more plentiful than brand planning in PR, I'm wondering if I should start thinking about account. Anyone here moved from strategy to account?

I hear that many companies from Europe are hiring talent intensively. Any thoughts or websites?

I accepted a $115K base salary, 13% bonus, 10k sign on bonus (scientist supervisor) job and two weeks later, got a $135K base, 17% bonus, and 15K sign on bonus (Senior scientist role) offer from another company. Should I accept the new offer ? How do I tell the previous company about this? Also, I’ve already negotiated with the first company and the $115K base is the negotiated salary. I really do not prefer one company over the other. They’re both great! I’m very confused here. TIA🙏

I recently lateraled into Big Law. Most of my colleagues are homegrown. My shift did involve a big change in practice area, and there's work that I haven't done before that I now have to do.

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.
