I need to know if this is just my agency or a broader problem. Is anyone noticing a quiet erosion of their job? Like little tasks you used to do (social copy) being done by others not in creative. My copy being nitpicked to death by all other departments (sometimes offering ChatGPT alternatives? Art laying out chatGPT copy they prompted themselves? A couple of years ago, it wasn’t like this. It’s scary because the work is really suffering. But no one seems to care, even other creatives.

Just left my my position at a large hold co because of the aggressive push to use AI in every nook of the creative workstream. I told my supervisor that I was ethically and morally opposed to using AI so heavily and was reprimanded for it. So I'm going to a smaller independent agency that is using AI purely as a research tool and relying on creatives to actually do creative work.

Ive been on accounts where Account wrote social copy, but usually because we were tiny/understaffed. And nitpicking is nothing new. But if the AD is laying out AI copy, it’s your job to replace it.

If Account/ADs are just generating copy, call it out (politely). “I see you dropped some AI copy in there. I’ll get you something that fits the brand voice.” Or something like that.

like

I like that response. Thank you!

Yes I've experienced this erosion of copy tasks. Seems to me the genie is out of the bottle and it's only going to continue in this direction because of short-term cost. When I started out in advertising, a commonly held belief was that "there will always be a need for good copywriting." I don't believe that's true anymore -- partially because, we are living in a time when "good enough is good enough" -- if it fills the space properly, makes the main points, and imitates human tone of voice "just enough"-- then it's good enough. Standards of quality have gone down.

Except we need to push back NOW by educating business executives and other industry influencers that Ai creates only formulaic content which is the opposite of what a true copywriter offers.

like

I would start looking for a new job just to be safe. What you describe is how things wound down at my prior employer. Our entire marketing dept was gutted and replaced by AI and one AI expert to run it all. This is a tricky time for many roles that are being phased out. I hope that's not the case for you OP, but be aware and look out for other opportunities just in case.

It’s also that my CDs aren’t even including me on jobs that do require copy because they think they don’t have to anymore, thanks to AI.

like

That is more of a problem. Either flag or to their bosses (frame it as being a good steward of the brand) or get out. Honestly, both might be the better option. When a CD stops caring, you’ll never make good work under them.

like

Also realized I forgot to close my parentheses. It’s early.

like

it's not quiet. i have a few usual suspects at my agency. identify the problems and personalities at work — for example, if art needs to start layout, can you get placeholder to them earlier in the process? if you know a senior account person just needs control, can you compromise while introducing enough friction that it's annoying to do?

like

And you’re just doing your job. Sorry to hear that.

The nitpicking will happen regardless of AI if you’re at a heavily accounts-led agency. This sounds like a toxic environment where work is becoming a race to the bottom, sacrificing quality for cost-effectiveness. That’s a bigger problem philosophically that you probably won’t be able to solve even if you prove AI isn’t as good. Sounds like it’s time to move jobs

like

It seems everyone thinks they can write strategic copy and experience and talent no longer matter. Ai only creates formulaic content which is the opposite of what a true copywriter offers.

like

Yes, was happening at my previous job too (in-house at a SaaS company). GPT being used as reference point / conversation-starter / placeholder / substitute.

I don't have a problem with using AI for repetitive or formulaic type projects, like email sequences, carefully and with keen human oversight, but to me the big danger is when AI writing frames the discussion up front, because then you're already boxed into derivative thinking.

You either gotta gear up for a lot of challenging conversations, or as others have suggested, find a different job where the culture aligns better with how you want to approach AI, because it's not going anywhere!

i have experienced those things over the past year. yes.

I think there's an ebb and a flow to these things, but it's natural to be paranoid these days.
