Yes, it happens all the time. You’re not overthinking it.

Names, terrible but Face, memorable
Hmm, no, some people are just really bad with names. Heck, I'm horrible with names and rarely remember half the people I meet at a networking event. If the events you are going to are 98% white then when the few black people stand out so you're more likely to remember each other.
It has happened to me before, but I am also really bad at remembering names so I may be guilty of forgetting someone's name before too. Overall, I would say other black finance people remember me 9/10 unlike the white people I meet.
You’re not overthinking it
It's possible that you are experiencing a form of bias known as "unconscious bias." Unconscious bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. These biases can be based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, and many other factors.
It's not uncommon for people to struggle with remembering names, but if you are consistently experiencing this with white people at networking events, it's worth exploring whether there may be unconscious bias at play. It's also worth noting that memory is a complex process and many factors can influence our ability to remember names and faces.
If you feel comfortable, you could try bringing this up with some of the white people you've met at networking events. Let them know that you've noticed they don't seem to remember your name, and ask if there is anything you can do to make it easier for them to remember you. This can help to bring the issue to their attention and encourage them to be more conscious of their actions.
