I received an offer for a family law position, which I have no experience in. The employer is aware of this and willing to mentor. I've practiced in probate for the past two years, and I'm very passionate about this area of law.

I've been unemployed for about 2 months. I keep getting to the end of the interview process but am not chosen - this is very draining to see the end of the tunnel but not get the relief at the end. I financially am ok but do struggle if "extra" - continued in comments

Family law will make you regret ever becoming a lawyer. It is awful. He is willing to mentor someone with no experience bc it is a nightmare practice area. RUN.

I feel like I hear this about ID and criminal law sometimes. It makes me wonder which areas are actually the most sought after

Family law can be awful, but it is a paycheck and it will get you litigation experience fast. I wonder if there’s a possibility that lawyer may allow you to take probate work as well?

He does do some probate work but not much. He just does basic wills and some estate administrations.

Take the family law job. There’s overlap with family law, since a lot of people going through a family restructuring often think about planning for the future as well. Even if you go back to probate, the family law experience will likely be useful. The rumors are true, some people (like me) hate it but some enjoy it. Go for it.

Expenses do come up. I have to either accept or deny the offer soon. But I struggle on what to choose.

Do I take the position I'm not passionate about for better financial stability? (I feel like I'm giving up on what drives me to be a lawyer but the lessening of financial pressure would be nice). Or do I reject the offer and take the risk I don't get another offer in my desired area of law?

don't. stick to probate

So many negative nancy's. If you are not passionate about family law, don't take it. I personally am and my goal is to become a family law attorney because I love it, but it's not for everyone. Wait until you get a probate job offer.

Well, if you're comfortable with learning the ropes in family law, then take the job! Don't let the negative comments deter you. :) The experience itself would more than likely be beneficial regardless of whether or not family law is for you.
