I recently finished my JD while working full-time as a paralegal, but I’ve decided not to take the bar because I actually prefer the support side of the house. Now, when I apply for senior paralegal or legal ops roles, recruiters keep telling me I’m overqualified and will leave as soon as I find an associate gig. It’s frustrating because I’ve made a conscious career choice, but no one seems to believe me. How can I convince a recruiter that I’m in this for the long haul?

Yeah unfortunately once you have a JD the expectation is that you become an attorney - it does not make you more marketable as a paralegal, so if that was your thinking you made a misjudgment.

I am not sure I understand why anyone would go to law school and incur the expense to remain a paralegal. If you didn’t want to practice law there was no reason to get the J.D. degree. And no, you cannot do anything with a JD degree. I hear this all the time…..getting a JD is very marketable and opens up doors to do many things besides practice law. No it does not. You can really do one thing with a JD degree- practice law.

Having a J.D. degree does not increase your marketability for a paralegal position. There would be no reason for an employer to pay you an attorney salary to do the work of a paralegal and anyone looking at your resume, as you rightly put it, would assume you are not sticking around and would command more money.

Honestly, I would leave the JD degree off your resume if you are trying to get a paralegal job.

Some people are okay with a paralegal salary, even with a JD. It’s crazy that employers see not one advantage of having an advanced degree, if anything it’s seen as a disadvantage. Smh

I had a JD paralegal for years and he was the best. I eventually convinced him to take the bar, gave him the time off to study, and paid for his bar review course. He became my partner when I left the firm after he passed and is now thriving in his own right. Everyone has their own path. Believe in yourself

I have a friend who actually made the same decision but a bit later in the process and she has practiced 3 years and decided to be a paralegal and the firm is fine with downgrading her and she has been paralegal for 10 years now and seems happy
